On this episode, Dr. Jennifer Young Pierce talks with teacher, lymphoma survivor and author Glen Mutchnick about his book "Everybody's Got Tzuris," which documents his and others' cancer journeys. "Tzuris" is a Yiddish word that means difficulties, pain or troubles, and Glen says that having cancer definitely fits that bill and that everyone has some sort of difficulty in their lives. A lot of positive things came out of Glen's diagnosis, treatment and recovery. He used his cancer troubles as a lesson in his classroom, and he says his experience has taught him to "stop sweating the small stuff," and have more compassion and empathy for others.

Key Takeaways

- Everyone is affected by cancer.

- Don't Google your cancer diagnosis without also speaking to your cancer team and physician.

- Patience, positive thinking and leaning in to hope is essential for the cancer patient, physician and the caregiver.

- Appreciate every day and make each one count.

Glen Mutchnick Said:

Teaching my students about my condition was very important to me. The kids kept me alive and were my bright spot.

I wanted to be my students' example of how cancer works.

Every person has problems and difficulties. It's purely subjective.

A lot of good came out of my cancer. I became a better person. I stopped sweating the small stuff.

I tell people to take one day at a time. Try to appreciate every single day.

The lesson is to put everything in perspective and try to be as compassionate and empathetic with others as you can.
