Statistically, Black women are more likely to develop aggressive forms of breast cancer and die from the disease than white women. And, unfortunately, for too many of our patients, this isn't a statistic; it's their lives. On this episode, Dr. JYP does a deep dive on health equity with Lori Pierce, M.D., a radiation oncologist and the new president of the American Society of Clinical Oncology, the preeminent association for cancer doctors. Health equity in cancer care is Dr. Lori Pierce's focus for her term as president of ASCO, and she shares her unique insights, perspectives and hopes for how the latest cancer treatments, clinical trials and breakthroughs are available to everyone in need.
- No one should be denied care, or access to the best cancer care and treatment, regardless of race, economic status, religion, geography or gender.
- Physicians and medical leaders like Dr. Lori Pierce and ASCO are at the forefront of leveling the field for healthcare equity.
- Cancer does not discriminate. It affects all people regardless of race, religion or economic status.
- Physicians should avoid any preconceived patient biases and always offer the best cancer care and treatment options on a patient-by-patient basis.
